Do I need to buy a 4 pack of Pink Komen Lint Rollers at B.J.'s? Not really. We've been going out of our way to avoid the pink stuff. Not that we don't want to give money to cancer research (HELLO) but there are BETTER places than Komen.
30% of women who have breast cancer, no matter what stage it’s initially caught will have their breast cancer metastasize but under 5% of the millions of dollars each year collected by Komen and other large charities actual go to Metastatic research.
Komen spends more money in a year to sue small charities who use the term, "For the Cure" than they give to Metastatic Breast Cancer Research. What's wrong with this picture!? That's disgusting and not right. It’s eye opening the things you find out about these big charities when you’re on the front lines of Stage 4 Breast Cancer.
Eyleen goes in for a double mastectomy on Thursday, June 16 the day after school ends. Chris is coming the night before and being amazing by staying with me while we wait for her to get out of surgery.
Katie is coming the day of also and will be around for the two weeks of gross drains and such that I can’t handle. SERIOUSLY I can’t handle. We were watching “Being Chaz” last night and almost passed out when his girlfriend was measuring and pouring out his drains. Oh man I’m getting gross hot slobbers just thinking of it. THANK YOU KATIE!!!!
Lois & Mark will be here sometime at the beginning of July, which is very nice so someone will be with Eyleen throughout the summer so I don’t have to miss too much work. As soon as the drains come out she’s gonna have 4 weeks of radiation, 22 treatments. After that at the beginning of August we’ve rented a house on Tybee Island and plan to do nothing but lay around and RELAX finally for FIVE WHOLE LONG GORGEOUS DAYS.
That’s really about it. Things have been going very well. Eyleen’s starting to get hair back, I bet by the end of the year she’ll have a full head of hair about my length.
She has a doctor’s appointment today to get her started on the oral chemo drugs and such and then one more appointment with the surgeon before Thursday. We’re both starting to get that sick anxious feeling since nothing’s really happened in almost a month. It’ll be alright though.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-65054615649957419292011-04-06T12:48:00.001-07:002011-04-06T12:51:14.620-07:00AMAZING!Hey guys! It’s been a crazy few weeks since I last posted. With Eyleen’s last treatment they took out the Adriamycin chemo and with it decided not to give her the neulasta shot because Adriamycin is the one that drops your white blood count. Plus she was supposed to get a PET scan on March 23 and the neulasta could affect the PET. The whole weekend before the 23rd she wasn’t feeling well and it continued until she woke me up at 3:30 in the morning on the 23rd with a fever of 104.7. At first I thought the thermometer HAD to be broken so I ran to the CVS real quick and got a new one that immediately went back to 104.7 when I put it in her mouth. I got her in the car and called Dr. Marks on the way to the hospital to let him know I was taking her to the ER by our house. She was admitted later that morning with pneumonia and dangerously low white blood cells. A normal person’s WBC is 4.3 to 10.8. Eyleen’s was .3. She was in the hospital in a private room and we all had to wear masks and gloves in the room. They told her she’d be lucky if she’d get out on Saturday. Thursday night her WBC were still .3. Friday as I left from work she called me and told me that they were discharging her because her WBC went up to 1.3 and her pneumonia was almost all cleared up.
The hospital staff was VERY impressed with what a fast recovery she made. She works real well with medication. And is doing VERY well now, especially since she’s back at school. Having to rest AND being on Spring Break was NOT helping her because she couldn’t do anything and it was stressing me out because I’ve never seen anyone who just couldn’t RELAX. Haha

First let me preface this next thing by telling everyone something that alot of people didn’t know. We decided not to tell everyone except a few friends and our families because we wanted to see how things played out. Back in Jan. when Eyleen had her PET scan we found out that not only did she have the main tumor in her breast but she also had spots on her spine, her sternum, femur, hip and rib under her breast. It’s a scary thing to see and even scarier to deal with knowing that you’re stage 4.
Through all of this Eyleen never got down and continued and still does continue to kick cancer’s ass. But we didn’t want to let everyone know about the diagnosis when she was still fighting.
So anyways.
April 1 Eyleen went to Dr. Marks with her mom to find out what was going on. She called me around 415 or so and the first words out of her mouth were “It’s Gone.” I was so excited, “That’s great I thought now we can start focusing on the bone spots.” “No, it’s GONE in the bones.” She told me. “The bones are clear and the main tumor has shrunk by 99% overall.”
I don’t remember much after that. I remember running around my office telling everyone the most INSANE MIRACLE news I’ve ever gotten until Amber tearing up herself looked at me and demanded I get out of the office and go home with the biggest thing of flowers and cake and celebrate.
And that’s exactly what I did. I brought home the most gorgeous flowers and cupcakes from our favorite cupcake place and had an amazing weekend.
Yes, Eyleen’s cancer is gone from her bones.
She still has this 6th treatment then 3 more after that to get her to summer where she’ll get a right side mastectomy and then will receive radiation on the main tumor site. She’ll go on to Tamoxifen and an oral chemo and at the end of summer she will be NED (no evidence of disease). We’re praying for a LOOOOOOONNNNGGG long stay from NED. He can stay around as long as he likes, which will probably be for the next 50 years since it’s Eyleen and her crazy overachieving butt. :)Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-23276472889929823022011-03-16T08:55:00.000-07:002011-03-16T08:57:15.983-07:00Rockin' It OutEyleen is at Chemo right now and I want to first of all give MAD props to Mark, Lois and Shane for this being the first time I've had to take a day off work to take Eyleen to her visits. I love you guys so much for the help.
10 days ago was Eyleen's appointment with the doctor and to get her Xgeva shot after her 4th treatment. It was earlier than it usually is but at that time her tumor had shrunk another 5% overall and a 50% reduction after the 3rd treatment. Well today she had to see the doctor before her 5th treatment to go over the results of her MUGA heart test. In 10 days between that time her tumor shrunk another 1%. She's sitting at 96% reduction overall. It's so small now that the doctor had to press hard to find it. :)
On the MUGA front, her heart function is at borderline normal so they're taking the A out of her TAC treatment and they're giving her a medicine to help get her heart function back to normal.
The medicine will also help her water pill work better, which is good because the xgeva is kicking her butt and swelling of her feet and legs is crazy.
Next Friday she'll have another PET scan and then we'll get the results before 6th and hopefully final treatment. Keep your fingers, toes and everything else crossed folks. :)Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-1179472162761102952011-02-23T12:13:00.000-08:002011-02-23T12:14:11.670-08:00Just Keep SwimmingSorry for the overdueness of this post. It’s been a hard last month in the Schmavenport house.
The Monday before Eyleen’s 3rd treatment my grandma passed away. I went to Sanford to be with my family for the funeral and Eyleen did a round of chemo assisted by our friend, Shane as her chauffeur.
When I came back Eyleen had extreme pain in her back. It lasted the whole weekend and Monday I called the doctor to get her some pain pills. Monday night I went to CVS and they didn’t have anything. It was late in the day when I called the doctor so I thought it would be there Tuesday. WRONG. Tuesday went by with me calling CVS 484759 times and the doctor’s office just as much. Wednesday came around and I called the doctor who told me they sent over the prescription on Monday. Eyleen was in so much pain she was hunched over her desk at school and had to have help to her car. The doctor called CVS and chewed them out and the meds were ready by the time Eyleen was almost home. The back pain is gone now so that’s really good. Then last week on Wednesday Eyleen came screaming down the stairs shoving her foot in my face. She had magically over the last few days sprouted cankles. She was so bloated her feet were purple. Friday was her appointment but I called them on Thursday anyway. Friday came and the doctor took a look, told her she had about 6-8 lbs. in each leg and have her medicine to reduce the water retention.
ALSO he gave us the news that within two months and three treatments her tumor has shrunk 90%. He thinks after today’s 4th chemo in a few weeks it will be almost indetectable. Eyleen is a freaking ROCKSTAR!
You know who else is a rockstar!? Eyleen’s parents. They came down on Sunday and have been working around our house the whole week. Tearing up carpet and staining stairs, grouting, caulking, cleaning, cooking. They’ve done everything and I love them for it. I can’t even put into words how much this week has meant to not only me but of course Eyleen who loves having her parents around.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-63497380351561793012011-01-29T07:53:00.000-08:002011-01-29T07:53:01.953-08:00Round 2 I'm Tyson at his prime and this cancer is on the ropesSo after the success of round 1 Dr. Marks said to expect some reduction but not the reduction we had in round one. Little did he know, my immune system is apparently Tyson in his prime. We shrunk it another 50% from round 1 for a total of drum roll please ... 80%. More numbers to toss at you.. when I started this journey, the tumor measured 8 by 10 or a mass of 80 it covered pretty much the whole breast. I had a lymph node the size of a ping pong ball and a scar on the side that measured 16cm. Yeah it was that bad.

Now my tumor measures 3.5 by 4 or a mass of 14. The lymph is no longer detectable and the scar is no longer measurable. While I still need 6 total rounds, Dr. Marks now expects the tumor to be shrunk into nothing by the 4th treatment.
Also, Christine has been fighting a cold for 3 weeks that I haven't gotten, why? Well apparently my blood counts are still in the range of a normal non chemo taking person. Still can't eat a salad though...lol oh well.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-31042880515271803962011-01-14T06:36:00.001-08:002011-01-14T06:36:24.324-08:00Cancer touches everyone. As we were waiting for dinner last night an older man stepped up next to us and asked Eyleen how much longer she had of her treatments. At first I wondered if she knew him but then realized she was rocking the beaubeau and had a shirt on that showed her port scar. He spoke to her about his wife who’d passed away from breast cancer that’d gone into her esophagus and told her in length that the key to beating cancer was your mind set. He told her a story about a friend that was told he had terminal cancer and they couldn’t operate. Everyday this man would have his wife drive him to Krispy Kreme for a dozen donuts then to the running track. Everyday he’d go a little bit further running and he’d say he was getting better. That was 18 years ago and the man said he still sees his friend all the time looking as good as he ever has.
He told me that I needed to take care of her and then excused himself only to come back a minute later and ask Eyleen her name and tell her that he was going to put her name on his church’s prayer list.
He also spoke about how Dr. Marks was an excellent doctor and he’s the best in Jacksonville, and if he thinks Eyleen is doing good then she really is because he doesn’t fool around.
I think I’m getting sick so Eyleen slept in the guest bedroom last night away from my cooties. I also got away from her crazy snoring. She’s not only lost the hair on her head but also the hair in her nose so she’s been having CRAZY snoring. It was so bad the other night I was having a nightmare and this horrible sound was in the dream. I woke up and the sound was still going on and for a minute I panicked before I realized the noise was Eyleen. They don’t tell you about the nose hair going. I think they need to start telling people about that.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-35243810438009932002011-01-12T18:38:00.000-08:002011-01-12T18:40:16.171-08:00Looking like Mr. CleanFriday was the PET scan results appointment with Dr. Marks. There's been a 48% reduction in the tumor after only one treatment. Dr. Marks was very pleased and impressed. We had an amazing weekend with family and friends at Universal and hanging out at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. :) I can't wait to go back.
Yesterday was Eyleen's second treatment and with it came more sick and tiredness than the first treatment but we're getting it until control. Not to mention there's pain in the tumor site again which is a VERY good thing even if it means pain pills. :) Dr. Marks said it won't be a reduction like last time but we're shooting for 10% this time around.
All weekend Eyleen's hair starting coming out more and in her words looked mangy so tonight I came downstairs and found her in the bathroom with her head all lathered up and with a razor in her hand.
I was terrified when she asked me to shave the back of her head but did a pretty good job before cocoa buttering it up. :)
Eyleen has an appointment with the therapist on Friday but it'll be another 3 weeks before we find out how things are going. After the whirlwind of this last month all this waiting is gonna drive me crazy if I don't get a handle on it.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-10310902143578823752011-01-06T07:09:00.000-08:002011-01-06T07:09:57.707-08:00What to do when your hairballs scare the cat?Cut it off of course! Monday was NOT a good day around the house. I think it's the first day I've seen any of this take it's toll on Eyleen. And why? Because her hair started coming out. They weren't lying when they told her to expect her hair to start coming out 10 days after chemo because that's exactly what it started doing. I came home on Monday and the cat was staring really hard at something by her food bowl. When I went to investigate there was a clump of hair. By Tuesday when I came home Eyleen looked like this:

She'd taken the scissors to her hair and I finished it up with clippers. I think it looks really cute and I'm so dang tempted to buzz mine as well.

I called the store on Tuesday and the wig is in. We will pick it up after the appointment with Dr. Marks on Friday, which we'll learn the results of the PET. Then we're off to Orlando with friends and family for a LONG weekend before Eyleen starts her second treatment on the Tuesday we get back.
Good news is we're already seeing really good results from the chemo so her body is reaction really well in kicking the cancer's ass.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-79127616703227966962010-12-26T12:10:00.000-08:002010-12-26T12:10:34.727-08:00It's ME!!!!!!Hey guys, thought I would take over the blog for a bit and let yall know how I am doing first hand. I am doing pretty freaking great actually! I mean I am a little achey and a little tired and holy hot flashes, but nothing I mean nothing compared to some of the horror stories you read on line... hence don't read things on line... except this..(= I do have to make sure I eat little meals and now I have to read every label looking for soy because I have to avoid it. Between my diet restrictions and Stiney's we are just having people over for dinner it is crazy to make people do all that for us.

So these head wraps, totally awesome totally cute.Thank you Chris, Hamp and Mom. I mean my hair looks crazy,so I just put on a cute head scarf and boom totally cute. I may keep rocking these after wards.
Here's Eyleen's haircut. She decided to get it short and take care of it when it starts falling out.

She also placed an order for a wig today. It looks like the above photo but it fits her head better and is a bit darker. No other updates. Eyleen's still not really feeling anything other than sore and a little tired so that's really good.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-87872561287954114302010-12-23T07:58:00.001-08:002010-12-23T07:58:45.847-08:00Still rockin' and rollin'Chemo went well yesterday. Eyleen goes in today for a shot to keep her white blood cell count up and then she doesn’t go back until the 7th to get the results of her PET, schedule her next appointment and to see how the chemo is working so far. Last night there was ALOT of pain in the boob so much so that over the counter meds weren’t working. We called the doctor around 8 and he sent in a prescription to CVS. He did say that even though it hurts really bad it’s actually a REALLY GOOD sign that the chemo is already attacking the tumor.
Eyleen has an appointment today to get her hair cut so here’s the last photo of Eyleen with a full head of hair for awhile. She promised me that the annoyed look on her face was towards the camera NOT the chemo. :)
Dr. Marks said that the PET doesn’t affect the treatment though because she’s getting a pretty aggressive chemo.
Chemo camp was A LOT of information, I think between the two of us we got everything down. What to look out for, what to eat what NOT to eat. Eyleen spent 15 minutes looking through vitamins at CVS to make sure she had one that wasn’t filled with 200% of every freaking vitamin. She also had to get 7 different meds she has to take daily in addition to the chemo that she’ll be doing once every 3 weeks. And that starts today at 11. It’ll be a 3 hour treatment each time. Maybe Santa will bring her a Nook Color to keep her busy.
We went out to Lake City last night to visit my family for Christmas since everyone will be scattered all over the place for the actual day. It was good and my nephew is so freaking adorable.
On the way over though Eyleen’s father sent her a picture on her phone and for the first time this whole process (which BTW has only been two weeks, but the longest 2 of my life) Eyleen cried. Tears of happiness though.
It's gonna be a BUSY week and that's not even including Christmas stuff. More updates to follow.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-53097954858505133812010-12-17T17:58:00.000-08:002010-12-17T18:08:39.991-08:00More boobie gazingEyleen had her first oncology appointment with Dr. Marks who is apparently really awesome and very determined to help Eyleen kick this cancer's butt. She didn't get the PET scan today because her port site hasn't healed enough and Dr. Marks said it would cause a false positive. Monday she has a follow up with the surgeon, Dr. Crump, Tuesday we have something called Chemo Camp where we'll learn all the needed chemo and staying healthy through it things and then Wednesday Eyleen starts her first of 18 weeks worth of chemo. Dr. Marks is giving her three different types because the cancer is aggressive.
We're heading to the beach tomorrow to go to In The Pink so Eyleen can pick out her scarf that she'll need by the second treatment.
She still amazes me with her strong, upbeat attitude even when I'm weepy and I know things are gonna be fine. You all know Eyleen, she comes screeching in at the last minute and it looks like everything's gonna crash down on her but then she gets through it on the other side. We love her though. :)Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-90521157837848764672010-12-14T18:06:00.000-08:002010-12-14T18:06:52.187-08:00I'm too sexy for my hairnet?

Hey everyone! It's been a LONNNNNNNG day. Yesterday we met with Dr. Crump, the surgeon. He let us know that in Eyleen's case it's better for her to start with chemo and then after 4-6 months of treatments he'll do the mastectomy in the summer. Today she had to go get the chemo port put in so they can start her treatments next week. I made her take a picture in her LOVELY outfit above while we waited. :)
The procedure went well and now she's zonked out on Lortabs on the couch. She's doing really good even if she's in pain from today.
She's outta work tomorrow, which she needs. The port has to heal so they can start chemo next week. Friday she has an appointment with the oncologist and they're gonna do a PET scan to make sure the rest of her body is all clear and then we'll FINALLY know what's exactly going on with the cancer.
We love you guys.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4089874743640112246.post-34756317753477272992010-12-13T06:28:00.000-08:002010-12-13T06:28:08.037-08:00Ready...Set...GOMost of you already know by now that Eyleen was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last Wednesday, Dec. 8. Today we’re going to the surgeon for a pre-op appointment and they’ll probably have Eyleen in for surgery by the end of the week, especially since Christmas is the following week. It looks like she’ll need a mastectomy on her right side.
We’re both tired and trying to be strong, with Eyleen succeeding more than me at times. Eyleen has AMAZING friends and a support network and she’s going to beat this thing. Come on, it’s Eyleen, she’s hardheaded and if you tell her she CAN’T do something she’ll do it just to show you she CAN. She’s strong and I love her and we’ve got this thing.
I’ll be updating this blog whenever we know something so everyone can see what’s going on and you can stay ABREAST of the news from the Schmavenport household.Stineyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14978364119688360269noreply@blogger.com4
